Final Design for San Francisco’s New Public Trash Cans Narrowed to Three Concepts

Final Design for San Francisco’s New Public Trash Cans Narrowed to Three Concepts
Members of the Public Have an Opportunity to Weigh in on the Proposals Online

San Francisco, CA – Public Works, in collaboration with the industrial designers at the Institute for Creative Integration (ICI), has narrowed the design of the City’s new public trash cans to three final concepts.

Today, there are more than 3,000 public trash cans on City sidewalks and in public plazas that serve a vital role in combatting litter. Unfortunately, many have become easy targets for scavenging, which leaves behind a mess.

“San Francisco is a beautiful city and keeping it clean can be a challenge. Finding the right public trash can to serve our needs at a reasonable cost has driven this design process,” said Acting Public Works Director Alaric Degrafinried. “All three contending designs meet our requirements conceptually: They are durable, hard to tamper with, easy to service and aesthetically pleasing.”

The look of the new cans is intended to complement the design of the new JCDecaux public toilets, now in production, the BART canopies on Market Street and the café on Civic Center Plaza. The smart cans also will be outfitted with sensors that send alerts when they’re nearing capacity so they can be emptied before they overflow.

The three contending designs will be presented at the Arts Commission Civic Design Review Committee on Sept. 21. Leading up to the meeting, Public Works also is soliciting initial public feedback on the designs. Comments can be made http://sfpublicworks.org/trashcanredesign

If given the greenlight at Civic Design Review, Public Works will have 15 prototype cans – five of each design – manufactured and installed throughout the City for real-life testing.  Comments will be solicited from residents; nonprofit partners who help keep the City clean; Recology, the private company that services the cans; neighborhood merchants; and Public Works crews, who deal with day-to-day litter cleanup. Their input will inform the decision on the final selection.

San Francisco Public Works’ Roadway Improvement Project Kicks Off Today

For immediate release: Aug. 25, 2020

San Francisco Public Works’ Roadway Improvement Project Kicks Off Today
Crews Applying a Micro-surface Seal to Extend the Life of Approximately 100 Blocks

San Francisco – Today marks the start of a roadway improvement project to resurface approximately 100 blocks over the next month to make City streets safer and smoother for all users.

San Francisco Public Works’ contractor crews are applying a thin layer of protective material on top of the existing asphalt pavement to prolong the life of the streets – a process known as micro-surfacing.

The annual micro-surfacing operation preserves asphalt pavement by protecting the surface from the effects of natural aging and the environment caused by inclement weather, excessive heat and the searing effects of the sun. The mixture of liquid oil and crushed rock used for micro-surfacing can extend the life of pavement at a fraction of the cost by restoring the surface of a roadway and sealing off any moisture and preventing oxidation that can cause deterioration and require more costly repairs later.

Micro-surfacing takes two days to complete per block, compared to several days or weeks for a full roadway reconstruction operation that includes street base repairs and repaving.

The street improvements are taking place in neighborhoods throughout San Francisco, among them Potrero Hill, the Sunset, the Bayview, the Mission, Diamond Heights, Sunnyside and Oceanview.

More details on the micro-surfacing project, including parking and traffic restrictions, work hours and the micro-surfacing process, can be found at www.sfpublicworks.org/microsurfacing

About San Francisco Public Works: The 24/7 City agency cleans and resurfaces streets; plants and nurtures City-maintained street trees; designs, constructs and maintains City-owned facilities; inspects streets and sidewalks; builds curb ramps; eradicates graffiti; partners with neighborhoods; trains people for jobs; greens the right of way; and educates our communities.

Annual Great Highway Sand Relocation Work Continues into Saturday

For immediate release: June 26, 2020
Contact: Rachel Gordon, rachel.gordon@sfdpw.org

ANNUAL GREAT HIGHWAY SAND RELOCATION WORK CONTINUES INTO SATURDAY

San Francisco, CA – The City’s annual Great Highway Sand Relocation Project is scheduled to wrap up on June 30, as previously announced. However, due to an unusually large accumulation of sand this year, San Francisco Public Works has authorized the contractor to extend the work week into Saturday, June 27, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The project, which began June 22, calls for the contractor, Yerba Buena Engineering & Construction, Inc., to redistribute approximately 18,000 cubic yards of sand, moving it from the side of the roadway toward the ocean. The aim is to reduce the likelihood of sand buildup on the Great Highway during windy weather.

In addition to the removal of sand at the seawall between Noriega Street and Santiago Street, the project will address the sand accumulation at Judah Street.

Traffic lanes in both directions of the Great Highway already have been closed and used as a promenade for pedestrians and cyclists during the City’s Shelter-in-Place Order. However, Public Works is asking that people avoid using the southbound lanes during the sand relocation project to avoid the earth-moving equipment used for the operation. Initially, the work was to take place only on weekdays, but the addition of an extra day on Saturday is needed to complete the job on time.

Public Works has a small window to perform the annual work; it must be timed to make sure crews do not disturb the Snowy Western Plover, a small shorebird that is protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. The plovers can be found at Ocean Beach about 10 months out of the year but take off in the spring or early summer to nest in other coastal areas and inland salt flats.

Monitors with the federal Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) have confirmed that the plovers have left Ocean Beach and that it is safe to begin relocating the sand.

The work is being done in coordination with the GGNRA and under a special-use permit for activities that occur on federal parklands.
