Spring Cleaning: Volunteers to Spruce Up District 8 Neighborhoods

Weeding, Pruning and Litter Removal on Tap for Saturday Morning

San Francisco, CA – More than 200 volunteers are expected to join Supervisor Jeff Sheehy and Public Works crews on Saturday, May 13, at this month’s Community Clean Team event to green and clean Glen Park, Noe Valley, Castro and adjacent District 8 neighborhoods.

• Kickoff location: Mission High School, 3750 - 18th Street
• Who: Community volunteers, Supervisor Sheehy, City work crews

Photo opportunities at Saturday’s event include:

• Installing pebble mulch and removing dead vines at Harvey Milk Plaza and Pink Triangle Park
• Removing litter around Mission High School and Dolores Street between 14th and 20th streets
• Weeding, pruning and green-waste removal at the Eureka Valley/Harvey Milk Memorial Library

Community Clean Team is Public Works’ largest and longest-running volunteer program and is now celebrating its 17th year. Each month, Community Clean Team visits a different supervisorial district where volunteers from across the City join together to spruce up and beautify their communities. Since 2000, volunteers, who have logged more than 176,000 hours, added more than 33,900 plants to public spaces and collected more than 2,200 bags of litter from our neighborhoods.

The program’s success relies on the many sponsors and volunteer organizations that pitch in. They include 76, Starbucks, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Friends of the Urban Forest, PG&E, Emerald Fund, The Hilton, Recology, Academy of Art University, United Playaz, Mission Neighborhood Centers, Walgreens, Luxor Cabs, San Francisco Clean City Coalition, Local 261, San Francisco Parks Alliance, San Francisco Housing Authority, San Francisco Pretrial Diversion Project, San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, Community Youth Center San Francisco, San Francisco Unified School District, Tzu-Chi Foundation, SF Geo Care and SF Environment.
