STUDENTS TRANSFORM GREY TO GREEN
SIDEWALK LANDSCAPE DEMONSTRATION PROJECT UNVEIL WITH CEREMONIAL TREE PLANTING
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The Department of Public Works, San Francisco Botanical Garden Society, San Francisco Parks Trust, community partners and Argonne Elementary students will unveil a demonstration sidewalk garden on Friday, October 21 at 1pm at Argonne Elementary School, 680 18th Avenue, between Cabrillo & Balboa. The event will feature a ceremonial tree planting by Argonne students and instructional videos intended to educate and inspire residents, schools, businesses and other city agencies to start their own sidewalk landscapes.
DPW’s Sidewalk Landscaping Program provides residents the opportunity to convert cement sidewalks into a mini garden. DPW in partnership with the SF Botanical Garden Society and the SF Parks Trust launched workshops called Grey2Green to educate people about the permit, design, and maintenance process to undergo the transformation. As part of this effort, Argonne Elementary School transformed portions of the sidewalk into green space; providing a learning experience about the importance and value of green space in the urban environment.
