Powell Street Improvement Project

Project description

Powell Street is being transformed into a vibrant, world-class downtown corridor that celebrates San Francisco’s iconic character while improving safety, accessibility, and the overall pedestrian experience. The Powell Street Improvement Project runs along Powell Street between Market and Geary Streets in San Francisco, California.

This project consists of roadway improvements, sidewalk replacement work, sidewalk extensions, lighting installations, and landscaping improvements. Work may involve roadway demolition, site grading, sub sidewalk basement work, waterproofing, utility relocation work, traffic routing, temporary pedestrian routes, and all related work.

The project includes the selection and installation of durable, high-quality materials for sidewalks, lighting, and site furnishings to ensure long-term performance, safety, and ease of maintenance. It also requires close coordination with MUNI Operations to minimize impacts and shutdown time to ongoing cable car service and customer access.

Throughout construction, the project team will actively coordinate with property owners, residents, and merchants to support access, minimize disruptions, and keep the corridor open and active for the community and local businesses.

Careful construction phasing and traffic management will be implemented to maintain safe and efficient circulation for vehicles and pedestrians, reduce disruptions, and ensure the area remains accessible throughout construction.

Once complete, Powell Street will be a safer, more welcoming, and distinctly San Francisco streetscape that strengthens the connection between residents, visitors, and the heart of the downtown corridor.
