Graffiti Wipeout 2020

We are sorry to have to announce that we are postponing the Graffiti Wipeout 2020 event that San Francisco Public Works planned for this Saturday, August 29, due to poor air quality caused by the continuing wildfires. Our top priority is to keep our volunteers and employees safe and healthy. We will be rescheduling the volunteer workday and will be back in touch with you when we have a new date. Strong community partnerships are essential to the care of San Francisco. Thank you for your continuing understanding and support.

San Francisco Public Works is excited to announce the return of our #LoveOurCity volunteer community workdays. Leveraging our partnerships with community members and organizations, our #LoveOurCity events help improve San Francisco’s shared public spaces. Our comeback event: Graffiti Wipeout 2020 on Saturday, August 29, 2020, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

We hope you can join! COVID safety protocols will be in place.

Here’s the plan: We’re focusing our attention on seven sites to abate graffiti tags. See locations below to sign up.

If you can’t join us at one of the organized volunteer work sites, we encourage you to remove graffiti near your home.

At the organized work sites, we’ll provide volunteers with paint, brushes, scrapers, disposable gloves and other graffiti-busting tools and supplies. If you live in San Francisco and plan to stick closer to home but need supplies, contact sf311. Our Community Programs staff will contact you to confirm your order and arrange a pickup day and time at the Operations Yard.

Unfortunately, we had to put our community volunteer events on hold beginning in March due to the COVID public health crisis. We’re ready to roll once again – with COVID precautions in place:

  • Face coverings and gloves will be mandatory at all events. Please bring your own face covering; we’ll provide disposable gloves.
  • Participants must adhere to social distancing guidelines: keep at least 6 feet apart unless you’re working with a member of your household.
  • Groups working in a particular area will be kept to a maximum of 12 people.
  • Anyone experiencing COVID symptoms is asked to stay home.

We’re looking forward to Graffiti Wipeout 2020 and hope to see you there!

Location #1

Broadway Tunnel (Entrance & Tunnel) - The connector of Chinatown and Russian Hill, this project will see volunteers painting just outside and inside the tunnel. Some volunteers may also walk alongside Polk Street and refresh city furniture (i.e. mailboxes and traffic light posts) along Polk Street.

Location #2

Black Wall @ 5th St. & Bryant – This location focuses volunteer efforts on a large black wall along a walking path that borders a navigation center. It is right next to a freeway on-ramp, so volunteers should be at least 13 years of age for this location.

Location #3

Fillmore Street Blitz - A half mile walking project along the commercial area of Fillmore Street. This project will see volunteers painting city furniture up and down Fillmore Street.

Location #4

Mission Street Blitz - A mile walking project along the commercial area of Mission Street. This project will see volunteers painting city furniture up and down the corridor.

Location #5

San Bruno Underpass - & Bayshore Wall - This project seems like two locations, but it’s actually just one area. It will see volunteers paint under a frequently tagged tunnel at San Bruno @ Paul and (right next to it) paint a wall along Bayshore that frequently is a canvas for taggers.

Location #6

Alemany & Crystal Street Underpass – A frequently tagged underpass at Alemany & Crystal Street. This area will also see volunteers performing some litter pickup.

Location #7

Fence (Along) 4039 19th Ave. & Fence (Along) 1101 Junipero Serra Blvd.
Private Property - Back fence of home along 1049/1054 Randolph homes. Fence & Donation box within gas station.
