SHARE-THE-ROAD SAFETY DEMONSTRATION AT SUNDAY STREETS
Goal aims to raise awareness for all users of the streets of San Francisco
San Francisco, CA – Visitors to San Francisco’s popular Sunday Streets event this weekend in the Richmond District will be able to get behind the wheel of a parked San Francisco Department of Public Works mechanical street sweeper truck to experience firsthand the challenges truck drivers face when navigating the City.
The demonstration is part of a campaign to raise road-safety awareness for everyone moving through San Francisco – drivers, bicyclists, skateboarders and pedestrians.
“In order to safely share the road, we all need to be on the lookout for each other,” said Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru. “Safety is our No. 1 priority.”
- What: Road-safety demonstration at Sunday Streets
- When: Sunday, Oct. 27, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Where: Southeast corner of Arguello Boulevard and Anza Street
Bikes and a wheelchair will be available for use around the parked truck so people get a better understanding of the potential hazards. Veteran Public Works truck drivers also will be on hand to talk to people about their experiences driving in San Francisco and their determination to keep the streets safe.
The demonstration at Sunday Streets is just one component of Public Works’ road-safety campaign. Public Works’ truck drivers receive hands-on training on how to safely operate their vehicles in San Francisco and how to drive defensively to anticipate the actions of others on the road to prevent accidents. In addition, Public Works recently increased staff training on how to safely share the road with bicyclists.
San Francisco’s mechanical sweepers, which are on the street 24 hours a day, cover more than 146,000 miles a year. Public Works put together a training video for the department’s drivers that highlights some of the hazards they may encounter. It can be viewed at:http://youtu.be/jAs6GCa9fcQ
