Main Street Improvements Project

Construction is currently paused until further notice as we coordinate our plans for this area with an upcoming building development project.

Once a timeline for construction start is confirmed, we will begin re-notifying the public. Thank you for your understanding and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Project Description

San Francisco Public Works has partnered with Bay Area LightWorks, Inc. to perform vital infrastructure improvements on Main Street Street between Market Street and Howard Street. Construction on this project is scheduled to begin in January 2026 and reach completion in Fall 2027.

The project scope of work includes sidewalk reconstruction, sidewalk bulb-out construction, curb ramp reconstruction, concrete street base repair and street re-paving. We will also be constructing new concrete islands dividing Main Street's sidewalks and loading zones from adjacent vehicle travel lanes. These islands are intended to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility.

This entire stretch of Main Street will be re-paved. We will also be replacing the concrete street base on certain portions of the roadway that have more significant structural damage. The concrete islands will span both blocks of Main Street between Market and Howard Streets, and will be located on the eastern side of the street (closest to odd-numbered buildings).  We will be fully re-constructing the roadway at the intersection of Main Street and Mission Street. However, the Main Street and Howard Street intersection will be reconstructed at a later date, as part of the upcoming Transbay Howard Streetscape Improvement Project. New, ADA-compliant curb ramps will be constructed at the Main Street and Mission Street intersection.

We apologize in advance for any inconvenience caused by construction. We will do everything possible to minimize the impact of our activities in the neighborhood. If you have concerns (scheduled deliveries, construction questions, accessibility needs, etc.) please contact the project's public affairs representative, Benjamin Peterson.

Your cooperation will help this project be a success for your neighborhood and the City of San Francisco.  Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.
