Potrero Gateway Project

Project Update (August 2024)
Crews recently completed installation of the rock blanket along the 17th Street side.

Some of the remaining work includes installation of the bike median, irrigation line installation, planting, and installation of the fencing. We anticipate to have all work completed around mid-September 2024.

Project Description
The Potrero Gateway Project seeks to revitalize and reconnect the Potrero Hill neighborhood separated by US 101 by creating a gateway and providing a safe passageway under the freeway overpass along 17th Street from Vermont Street to San Bruno Avenue, and along Vermont Street between 17th and Mariposa Streets., locations on San Francisco’s Vision Zero High Injury Network. The project will improve pedestrian, bicyclist, and motorist safety and accessibility by widening sidewalks, constructing corner bulb-outs, enhancing bike lanes, installing new local native planting, and new pedestrian lights.

Public Works is also partnering with the San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) for a sculptural public artwork installation along 17th Street. The artwork will be installed after the Potrero Gateway Project infrastructure.

This project was sparked from a community initiative to improve the ignored space around and under the US 101. The Potrero Gateway Park Steering Committee is a community group that has been championing change and improvements in this area since 2012, working with the greater community and raising funds for this project. The Dogpatch & NW Potrero Hill Green Benefit District (GBD) is actively involved in the area providing maintenance through an Adopt-A-Highway permit and is partnered with Public Works for the continued maintenance of the space.

This project was made possible in part by Proposition AA Vehicle Registration Fee dollars provided by the San Francisco County Transportation Authority.
