Kate Anderson Named San Francisco's New County Surveyor

KATE ANDERSON NAMED SAN FRANCISCO’S NEW COUNTY SURVEYOR
Role oversees all mapping division processes and subdivision projects

San Francisco, CA – Public Works today announced the appointment of Kate Anderson as San Francisco’s new County Surveyor. She also will oversee mapping and subdivisions for the department.

Anderson is the first woman to serve in the post since San Francisco became a California county in 1850.

The County Surveyor plays an important role in housing production through the approval of projects that reconfigure land ownership and create new condominiums. The role is especially critical to the creation of new neighborhoods and the remaking of old ones, such as Mission Rock and Treasure Island. Public Works manages San Francisco’s official map.

“Our mapping division processes and reviews all subdivision projects that occur in San Francisco, including all condominium conversions, and provides surveying services for all City agencies,” said interim Public Works Director Carla Short. “Kate Anderson not only knows the technical ins and outs of surveying, but she has extensive knowledge about the distinctive attributes of our evolving city.”

Anderson has been surveying in San Francisco for more than two decades, most recently as president and founder of Vara Land Surveying. She has successfully delivered more than 200 projects since she founded the business in 2010. Anderson began her surveying career at Frederick T. Seher & Associates in 2001. She has been a licensed Land Surveyor with the State of California since 2008.

“I’m honored to be joining San Francisco Public Works in this important role and look forward to providing the highest level of public service to our mapping applicants for projects of all sizes,” Anderson said.

A San Francisco resident, she holds a bachelor’s degree in natural resource management from Michigan State University and a master’s degree in geography from San Francisco State University.
