Project Description
The 13th Street Safety Project will enhance safety and comfort for everyone who travels along the 13th Street corridor between Folsom Street and Valencia Street. The project aims to reduce conflicts among people walking, biking, and driving by implementing a series of targeted transportation safety improvements.

Planned upgrades include:

  • Sidewalk extensions to increase pedestrian visibility and shorten crossing distances

  • Signal timing and hardware upgrades to better organize and manage traffic flow

  • Protected bike lanes to physically separate people biking from vehicle traffic

  • Parking and loading zone changes to make more efficient use of curb space

This project is part of San Francisco’s High-Injury Network—the 12% of city streets where 68% of severe and fatal traffic collisions occur. Between 2018 and 2022, there were 100 reported collisions resulting in injuries in the project area. Over one-third of those collisions involved pedestrians or bicyclists. The most common contributing factors were red light violations, high speeds, and unsafe left turns, making 13th Street one of the city’s most collision-prone corridors.

By improving infrastructure for all modes of travel, the project will enhance multimodal safety and provide critical connections in San Francisco’s bicycle network, with direct links to the Folsom Street, Valencia Street, and Division Street corridors.
