Mission Street and Geneva Avenue Infrastructure Improvement Project

Project Update (January 2026):
The contractor is working on Segment III which is located on Mission Street between Russia Avenue and Theresa Street.

Crews continue raised crosswalk installation, traffic signal upgrades, curb ramp and bulb-out work, and bus pad installation. The bus pad work will require the contractor saw-cut, excavate, and compact the area at bus stops. Crews will then pour a concrete pad at the bus stop. Please note, although the bus pad work is expected to take 2-3 days to complete at each location, the area will remain closed to ALL vehicle traffic for approximately 10 days. This will allow the concrete bus pad enough time to properly cure before supporting the weight of vehicles. During this time, bus stops will be temporarily moved up/down the street. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience during construction.

Coming Soon:
The contractor is scheduled to start repaving Segment III in late February. The grinding (removing existing asphalt) and repaving phase is anticipated to take two days to complete on each block. Please note, the dates are tentative and subject to change due to unforeseen field conditions or rain. The tentative grinding and paving dates are as follow:

Wednesday 2/25 - Cotter Street to Brazil Avenue (Grind)
Thursday 2/26 - Cotter Street to Santa Rosa Avenue (Repave)
Friday 2/27 - Santa Rosa Avenue to Brazil Avenue (Repave)
Monday 3/2 - Brazil Avenue to Russia Avenue (Grind)
Tuesday 3/3 - Brazil Avenue to Persia Avenue (Repave)
Wednesday 3/4 - Persia Avenue to Russia Avenue (Repave)

Project Description:
San Francisco Public Works, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), and the San Francisco Public Utilities are partnering to bring safety improvements and infrastructure upgrades to the Excelsior and Outer Mission neighborhoods. The Mission Street and Geneva Avenue Infrastructure Improvement Project includes approximately forty sidewalk bulb-outs, upgraded traffic signals at twenty locations, sewer main replacement at ten locations, concrete street base replacement work and street repaving throughout the project area. The project limits are:

  • Geneva Avenue: Prague Street to Mission Street
  • Mission Street: Geneva Avenue to Highway 280 Overpass (Trumbull Street)

Mission Street and Geneva Avenue are part of San Francisco's Vision Zero High Injury Network - the 13% of city streets where 75% of the severe and fatal collisions occur. The City and County of San Francisco adopted Vision Zero as a policy in 2014, committing to build better and safer streets, educate the public on traffic safety, enforce traffic laws, and adopt policy changes that save lives. The goal is to create a culture that prioritizes traffic safety and to ensure that mistakes on our roadways don’t result in serious injuries or death. The result of this collaborative, citywide effort will be safer, more livable streets as we work to eliminate traffic fatalities.

During construction, we'll send e-updates to inform neighbors about upcoming scopes of work, possible impacts, weekend work, completed project milestones, etc. Neighbors interested in receiving e-updates could SIGN-UP HERE.
