WHEN: Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 10am
WHERE: It's A Grind Coffee Shop, 1800 Polk Street (at Washington Street)
WHO: SF Department of Public Works, Middle Polk Neighborhood Association
WHY: Improper disposal of cigarettes is a major cause of litter in San Francisco. DPW will partner with neighborhood group to test different types of ashtray canisters for the public. Also, residents submitted catchy, memorable slogans to motivate smokers to safely deposit their cigarette butts into these ashtrays and not on streets. After two weeks more than 300 entries were submitted. The contest is part of a pilot project to rid Polk Street of unsightly cigarette butts that pile up in the neighborhood and near businesses.
