CITY CLOSES SOUTHBOUND LANES OF GREAT HIGHWAY AT SLOAT TO PERFORM EMERGENCY STABILIZATION

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The Department of Public Works (DPW) closed the one remaining southbound lane of the Great Highway south of Sloat Boulevard that links the area to Highway One. The closure and a detour will remain through Summer 2010 and traffic traveling south on the Great Highway will be diverted east at Sloat Boulevard to link to Skyline Blvd South.

Both northbound lanes on Great Highway remain open south of Sloat Boulevard. The closure and detour will remain until the roadway and infrastructure stabilization work is completed south of Sloat Boulevard where recent storms have caused at least 30 feet of the bluff to fall, eroding close to the southbound lanes of the roadway and requiring a Declaration of Emergency. The Declaration allows the City to quickly engage contractors and purchase materials for immediate mitigation measures to prevent further erosion from impacting the road and other city infrastructure.

Stabilization efforts will begin in the next two weeks. This closure does not affect the Great Highway between Sloat and Lincoln, which is periodically closed throughout the year due to flooding and sand removal.
