Various Locations Sewer Replacement and Pavement Renovation Project No. 39

Project Update

Buchanan Street
The contractor is scheduled to start Grinding & Paving operations on Buchanan Street. This phase of work is scheduled to begin on Monday December 16, 2019 and will take approximately 4 days to complete. The blocks scheduled to be repaved are Buchanan Street from North Point Street to Bay Street and from Magnolia Street to Union Street.

Phase I / Grinding
On Monday 12/16, the contractor will grind (remove existing asphalt from the roadway) along all the listed blocks. During this phase, access to your driveway will be possible; however, delays should be expected if crews are working on your block. Please allow extra travel time.

Phase II / Repave
  • On Tuesday 12/17, crews will repave Buchanan Street between North Point Street and Bay Street and Magnolia Street to Greenwich Street.
  • On Wednesday 12/18, the contractor will repave Buchanan Street between Greenwich and Union streets.
  • On Thursday 12/19 – Crews will complete any remaining associated paving work along the aforementioned blocks.

Please note: During the paving phase, driveway access will not be possible. Crews will apply a tack coat (liquid asphalt) to the roadway in advance of the hot asphalt. The tack coat promotes bonding between the concrete street base and the hot asphalt. During application of the tack coat and repaving, driveway access will not be available. If you need immediate access to your vehicle, please consider alternate travel plans.

Avila Street (Alhambra to Chestnut)
Crews are scheduled to resume curb ramp and sidewalk work at the end of this week.

Webster Street and Clay Street intersection
The sewer work on this block consists of catch-basin and culvert work. The work at this location is scheduled to start the week of December 16, 2019 and should take approximately 1 week to complete.

Sacramento Street
The sewer work on Sacremento Street (Buchanan to Octavia) was scheduled to start in Spring 2019 but had to be postponed until a later date due to pending Muni coordination. That work has since been rescheduled and will now start the week of January 06, 2020. We anticipate the sewer main replacement work on the two blocks of Sacramento Street will take approximately two months to complete barring any rain delays or unforeseen field conditions.

Project Description
San Francisco Public Works and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission have partnered to complete infrastructure improvements on several blocks throughout San Francisco. Our partnership allows us to minimize impacts to the public. This project will include sewer main replacement, curb ramp installation, street base repairs and repaving. Work hours will vary by location. However, typical working hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Weekend work is allowed but has not been scheduled at this time.

The blocks scheduled to be repaved under this contract are as follows:

  • Pine Street (Presidio Avenue to Octavia Street)
  • Pine Street (Gough Street to Van Ness Avenue)
  • Fern Street (Gough Street to Van Ness Avenue)
  • Laguna Street (Bay Street. to Vallejo Street)
  • Laguna Street (Jackson Street to Clay Street)
  • Laguna Street (Pacific Street to Jackson Street and Clay Street to California Street / Concrete Street)
  • Buchanan Street (North Point Street to Bay Street)
  • Buchanan Street (Magnolia Street to Clay Street)
  • Sacramento Street (Buchanan Street to Van Ness Avenue)
  • Avila Street (Marina Boulevard to Cervantes Boulevard)
  • Avila Street (Alhambra Street to Chestnut Street)
  • Capra Way (Mallorca Way to Scott Street)
  • Webster Street and Clay Street intersection

The blocks scheduled for sewer work under this contract are as follows:

  • Pine Street and Baker Street intersection
  • Pine Street and Broderick Street intersection
  • Pine Street (Buchanan Street to Laguna Street)
  • Pine Street and Octavia Street Intersection
  • Pine Street (Franklin Street to Van Ness Avenue)

The typical sequence of sewer work is to install the main along the block(s) followed by sewer lateral replacement. Once the sewer main has been installed or rehabilitated, Public Works’ engineering team will review video of the sewer laterals to determine which, if any, need to be replaced. The sewer laterals are the connection between the main and the sidewalk. Crews will then schedule lateral replacement work. Sewer service will not be interrupted during construction. Please continue to use your household and business plumbing as usual.

During sewer replacement, driveway access may be impacted while crews work on your block. Please allow extra travel time should crews need to plate over the trench and create a path for your vehicle. If crews are working in front of your house, please let them know a few minutes before you need to exit your driveway. They may need to create a path of travel for your vehicle. We appreciate your cooperation and patience during construction.

Once the sewer work has been completed on a block, crews will begin preparations to repave the block or rebuild the concrete roadway. Preparations may include installation of curb ramps or bulb-outs, concrete bus pads, concrete street base repairs and asphalt paving.

Please Note: During bus pad installation, driveways exiting on to the bus pad will not have access for approximately 10 days. Also, during re-construction of concrete blocks (roadway), driveways adjacent to the affected lane will not have driveway access for a period of approximately 10 days. This short inconvenience is necessary for the contractor to demolish, excavate, pour the concrete road panels and allow for proper curing time. The concrete road and bus pads must be allowed ample time to cure (dry) before vehicle traffic is allowed on to them. Residents impacted by this scope of work will be notified in advance once the work is scheduled.
