San Francisco Public Works’ Pothole-Repair Blitz This Weekend
Crews Will Be Patching the Pavement Saturday and Sunday
San Francisco, CA – Public Works’ pothole-repair crews will be working throughout the weekend to patch the City’s streets for a safer and smoother ride.
The recent string of storms – with more wet weather in the forecast – has been battering San Francisco’s streets.
Public Works fills about 350 potholes during a typical dry month; the number balloons when it rains. This past February, for example, crews filled nearly 1,800 potholes.
Four crews will be on the ground Saturday starting at 4 a.m., and working up to a 12-hour shift. Three crews are assigned to work Sunday, with a 6 a.m. start time.
They will work on heavily travelled streets that have been hit particularly hard by potholes, including 19th Avenue, Park Presidio Boulevard and Lombard Street. They also will be responding to service requests that have come through the City’s 311 customer service center.
San Francisco is not alone in dealing with a proliferation of potholes. City streets and highways across the rain-soaked west have been pummeled by potholes. The culprit? Water, and lots of it. If water gets through a crack in the street, it can start to soften up the road’s base. When a lot of traffic, and especially heavy trucks and buses, pass over, the cracks get bigger and eventually form potholes.
“This weekend’s pothole-repair blitz will help get the roads back in shape,” said San Francisco Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru. “Meanwhile, we encourage the public to contact 311 to report potholes so we can respond as quickly as possible.”
