We are committed to providing experience and mentoring to the next generation of leaders of Public Works and our community. The department has a variety of internship programs including:


Apprenticeship Programs

San Francisco will invest nearly $9 billion in improving and maintaining the City’s infrastructure through the Ten-Year Capital Plan and create tens of thousands of jobs. Public Works is committed to helping San Franciscans attain the skills and experience they need to be part of this growing workforce. In partnership with SF Human Services Agency, JOBSNOW and local unions, our apprenticeship programs provide training to hundreds of participants. Click here for more information.


Summer Engineering and IT Internships 

The summer internship program with our engineering division is for current college students in engineering, IT, and GIS. Some internship positions are unpaid, but offer an excellent opportunity gain valuable experience. Click here for internship information.


Project Pull Internship Program

Project Pull is a summer internship program for high school students and recent graduates that introduces young people to careers in architecture, engineering, business and science. The program develops talented youth who will one day serve as part of the City's workforce. For more information about the program, click here.


YouthWorks Internship Program

San Francisco YouthWorks is a career-oriented internship program for high school students. The Program matches local youth with city department employees who provide mentorship, supervision and training designed to expose them to careers and improve their skills in a supportive environment. Summer Youth Program

We partner with Mission Neighborhood Center (MNC) for the annual Summer Youth Program. It focuses on youth that live in SFHA facilities; youth with children; low income youth; and youth on probation. To ensure multiethnic citywide youth participation, we and MNC work with community based organizations for recruiting. Summer youth take on a variety of tasks during the summer program, including landscape maintenance, planting trees and shrubs, and picking up litter in neighborhoods. For more information, email


Public Affairs Internship Program

The Public Affairs division of Public Works has unpaid year-round internship opportunities. The Public Affairs team needs energetic self-starters to assist in web content management, special event coordination, program development, community outreach and media relations.
