Welcome to the Public Works Week 2020 webpage – your home base for calendar of events, an employee pet contest, videos, podcasts, Employee Recognition Awards and more! Be sure to check back each day for new postings and activities.
This year, our celebration of Public Works Week will be different – held virtually due to the ongoing COVID-19 public health emergency – but no less representative and creative.
In conjunction with our national colleagues at the American Public Works Association, we will be celebrating Public Works Week May 18 – May 22. Though we won’t be able to meet in person like in years past, there will be many opportunities to connect with colleagues, to celebrate the work of our many bureaus and to have a good time.
A little about Public Works Week: Held in San Francisco for more than a decade, the annual event gives us an opportunity to celebrate our achievements, acknowledge the rich and diverse work of the 1,600-plus employees who make up the Public Works team and share what we do with the broader community.
Have a question or a suggestion? Email us at hello@sfdpw.com. Enjoy the week!
One of the silver linings of the shelter-in-place order is the increased amount of time many of us have gotten to spend with our loved ones -- both humans and pets. The love, laughs and even distractions we receive from our pets are more important now than ever. That’s why we’re shining the spotlight on our furry (and feathered and scaly) friends during Public Works Week 2020 with a digital pet contest! This year, we’re going all out with 24 award categories that give all species, from frogs to ferrets, a chance to take center stage. All you have to do to enter is take a video or photo (video preferred) of your pet showing its star power!
Contest submission ends: Wednesday, May 20, 2020 at 5 p.m
Podcast - Snapshots
Snapshots is a new podcast series from San Francisco Public Works. Spend a few minutes to get to know your coworkers and get a little snapshot of who they are and what they do. With a workforce of 1600+ people, we may not always have the opportunity to cross paths, but maybe this will help bring us closer together.
Want to learn about the history of San Francisco's City Hall? Or ride along with our street cleaning crews after dark? We've produced more than 65 videos about the work we do. Don't miss an episode -- check out Public Works TV!

This week, we celebrated our amazing department during the annual Public Works Week. Though we weren't able to come together in person, we hope you enjoyed all the virtual festivities - whether hearing from your colleagues through our new podcast and our director at the livestream event, playing our amazing new online arcade game, taking a tour of our new building or simply recognizing your outstanding colleagues and our projects.
Public Works Week may be coming to a close after today's scheduled events, but know that the spirit of Public Works Week doesn’t end here. Each and every one of you are appreciated as individuals and for the great work you do. Every single day. The pride we each take in our work and in our department reflects how much we truly #LoveOurCity, our San Francisco.
