UNION SQUARE ASSOCIATION AND PUBLIC WORKS TEAM UP WITH STUDENTS FOR TREE DECORATING CELEBRATION

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The Department of Public Works (DPW) is partnering with the Union Square Association and BID, Market Street Association, De Marillac Academy and the Guardsmen to decorate a tree donated by the Guardsmen in Hallidie Plaza (Powell & Market) on Friday, December 11, 2009 beginning at 3:00 p.m. Students from De Marillac Academy, a tuition-free private school serving students from San Francisco's most under-served communities, created 100 holiday ornaments, to decorate the tree in the spruced up plaza.

The collaboration is the final event of the city's Holiday Sweep in the Union Square area that saw brick and sidewalk cleaning, 65 Holiday Poinsettia planted, 30 city trashcans painted, 25 tree basins filled and cleaned; 15 trees at the cable car turn-around on Powell Street pruned, railings repaired inside the plaza; roadway defects repaired on Geary, O'Farrell, Eddy, Ellis, Powell, Mason, Stockton streets and Grant Avenue; and brick repaired in Hallidie Plaza and on Market, Powell and Stockton streets.
