City's Adopt-A-Street Volunteer Program Turns Ten

Department of Public Works honors longtime volunteers during National Public Works Week

San Francisco, CA –The San Francisco Department of Public Works will celebrate the tenth anniversary of its Adopt-A-Street volunteer program by recognizing some of its longtime members at an Open House on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at 2323 Cesar Chavez Street.

Over the past ten years, more than 1,500 individuals, community groups and businesses have joined the program, and the membership keeps growing. Today, Adopt-A-Street members are making a difference in nearly every neighborhood in the City.

DPW launched the Adopt-A-Street program in 1998 as a way to partner with the community to address San Francisco's growing litter problem. The program asks residents and businesses to adopt their street and make a pledge to keep the sidewalk litter free. In return, DPW provides volunteers with street cleaning supplies such as brooms, dustpans, gloves, bags, paint and graffiti remover. The department delivers supplies to the Adopt-A-Street member's doorstep and picks up the trash afterward.
