24th Street Pavement Renovation and Infrastructure Improvement Project

PLEASE SIGN-UP HERE TO RECEIVE UPDATES DURING CONSTRUCTION

Project Update
Construction is scheduled to start on January 06, 2025 with completion anticipated in late May/early June 2025. In Janaury, our contractor will start sewer main replacement work on 24th Street between Fair Oaks and Quane streets. A seperate crew is scheduled to start curb ramp work at the 24th/Vicksburg intersection.

Project Description
San Francisco Public Works and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission are partnering to bring safety improvements and infrastructure upgrades to 24th Street in the Noe Valley neighborhood. Our partnership allows us to consolidate our work and minimize any impacts from construction. The limits of work on 24th Street are from Homestead Street to Guerrero Street. Note, the block between Noe and Castro streets was completed in 2023 and will not be repaved as part of this project.

The scope of work includes sewer main rehabilitation/replacement, curb ramp installation at 4-way intersections and T-intersections, concrete bus pad installation, concrete street base replacement, grinding & paving, and stamped crosswalk work at the Sanchez St. intersection.

Sewer Work
Our engineers have inspected the existing sewer main on 24th Street and have determined that some blocks are in need of repair or replacement. The blocks along 24th Street scheduled for sewer work are Sanchez Street to Vicksburg Street and Fair Oaks Street to Quane Street. The block between Sanchez and Vicksburg streets will be rehabilitated through a process called cured-in-place-liner. The contractor will access the sewer main via the manholes and will reline it. This process is less impactful since it doesn’t require full excavation however the work is continuous (24x7) and requires a few days to complete on a block. Once the main is relined, our engineering team will review video of the sewer lower laterals to determine which, if any, should be replaced. The lower laterals are the connection between the sewer main and the curb/sidewalk. Sewer laterals are only replaced on an as-needed basis depending on the condition of the existing line.

The block between Fair Oaks and Quane streets is scheduled for full replacement. This work will require shoring, excavation, and installation of the new line. The sewer work on this block will take approximately 3 weeks to complete.

Bus Pad Construction
This project also includes installation of new concrete bus pads at bus stops. This phase of work will require the contractor saw-cut the roadway, excavate the area, and replace it with concrete. During installation of the new bus pads, the newly poured area will remain closed 24x7 to all vehicle traffic for approximately 10 days. Although work at each bus pad is expected to only take a few days to complete, the area will have to remain closed in order for the concrete to cure and reach the necessary strength before supporting the weight of vehicles. During this time, any affected bus stop will be temporarily relocated further up/down the block.

Parklets/Shared Spaces
During construction, the parklet sponsors will need to temporarily remove their parklets. We will continue to strategize amongst the project team and contractor on how to minimize any parklet downtime. We’ll coordinate with each parklet sponsor on when they’ll need to remove their parklet. We apologize for the inconvenience.
