In accordance with Public Works Code, Article 16, Section 806, a written appeal may be made in regards to the removal of a tree within 15 or 30 days of the posting date (depending on the posting period).  Appeals must state the grounds for the appeal and may be sent to urbanforestry@sfdpw.org or mailed to San Francisco Public Works Bureau of Urban Forestry, 49 South Van Ness Ave, Ste 1000, San Francisco, CA 94103.

Our aim at Public Works is for San Francisco to have a thriving, robust urban forest.

That is why we always look for all alternatives before choosing tree removal or approving a property owner's request for removal. However, removals are sometimes necessary to protect public safety, first and foremost, and to navigate the many challenges of growing trees in an urban setting.

We always look to see if a street tree is replantable in its current location, or closest available site.  If we have explored all options and cannot replant a street tree, that means the basin is not in compliance with Public Works Director's Order 187,246, as well as with the Minimum Guidelines which can be found on the Plant a Street Tree page.  Some common considerations that limit street tree replanting include sidewalk width, proximity to any existing infrastructure (street lights, traffic lights, stop signs, bus stops, etc.) and conflicts with any underground utilities.

If Location IS replantable, tree will be replaced unless conflict with underground utilities is found. If conflict is found, replacement will be relocated or added to deferred replacement report if replacement location not found within 120 days.

If Location is NOT replantable, Replacement will be relocated or added to deferred replacement report if replacement location not found within 120 days.

Please note, photos and descriptions will be removed once the posting period has expired. Contact urbanforestry@sfdpw.org or 628-652-TREE (8733) with questions or for more information.

Second tree on site was DENIED as it is in good condition and CANNOT be replaced. • District 2

    Site: 2

Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Removal without replacement at the same site of one (1) Italian stone pine tree (Pinus pinea) by Public Works. While the tree canopy itself shows good vigor, and the structure is fair, the issue with the tree is the amount of sidewalk damaged caused by the roots of the tree.  The tree roots are uplifting 2 driveways and the roadway. The tree has outgrown its space. Major roots will need to be removed in order to make repairs, resulting in destabilization of the tree.Tree is not replantable at this site but will be replaced nearby. The tree is also beginning to block access to the fire hydrant on one side. Sidewalk has been repaired mutliple times; wrong tree, wrong place.

Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Necessary root pruning for previous sidewalk repair has created unstable long-term structure. Location is replantable.

  • District 2

    Site: 1

Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Tree has experienced multiple limb failures recently. Recent sidewalk repair pruned roots which is not sustainable for this species. Large wound at the base of the tree and multiple signs of decay throughout the crown of the tree. Tree is replaceable.

    Posting Period: 02/09/26 - 03/11/26

  • District 3

    Site: 1

Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Evidence of hairline fractures along the section of foundation directly adjacent to the tree. This is an indication the foundation has been weakened there. Siding on the building has been uplifted by the root crown of the tree. The continued expansion of the tree will probably impact that weakened foundation and undermine its stability. Location is not replantable. Permit 804427

    Posting Period: 01/20/26 - 02/19/26

  • District 4

    Site: 1

Reason(s) for Tree Removal: The Subject tree is a mature street tree located within the public right of way adjacent to a residential sidewalk, curb cut, and underground utility infrastructure. The tree has a well established trunk with a constrained root zone due to surrounding hardscape, including concrete sidewalk panels, curb, and underground utilities.   The tree roots have caused surface and significant uplift causing cracking and displacement of sidewalk panels. The concrete is uneven and fractured, creating a trip and fall hazard for the pedestrians in this location. The water box is displaced and root pruning required to reset the meter, which is damaged, will destabilize the tree. The site is not not replantable and the replacement will be relocated.

    Posting Period: 01/20/26 - 02/19/26

  • District 4

    Site: 1

Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Public Works initiated tree removal. Tree needs to be removed due to sidewalk repair. Repair will result in major structural roots being cut, making the tree unstable. Location is not replantable.

    Posting Period: 01/26/26 - 02/25/26

  • District 8

    Site

Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Removal of nine (9) trees from a parcel of property owned by Public Works. Seven (7) bluegum eucalyptus trees (Ecaylyptus globulus) and two (2) Monterey cypress trees (Hesperocyparis macrocarpa) are in poor health, located on the steep grade above houses near 1317 Bosworth St. The PUC has removed a large section of trees which formerly shielded these trees from wind dynamics that these trees are now fully exposed to. Decline in canopy vigor, many of the trees lean downhill and towards multiple homes. The trees will not be replaced on site due to limited physical access to the site. Public Works will explore replacing nine (9) replacement trees nearby (along Bosworth and Chenery).

  • District 9

    Site: 1

Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Two largest stabilizing roots on tension side of lean over road must be cut for necessary sidewalk repair. Due to the narrow sidewalk, and no room in the setback, the location is not replantable. A replacement tree will be planted nearby.
