In accordance with Public Works Code, Article 16, Section 806, a written appeal may be made in regards to the removal of a tree within 15 or 30 days of the posting date (depending on the posting period).  Appeals must state the grounds for the appeal and may be sent to urbanforestry@sfdpw.org or mailed to San Francisco Public Works Bureau of Urban Forestry, 49 South Van Ness Ave, Ste 1000, San Francisco, CA 94103.

Our aim at Public Works is for San Francisco to have a thriving, robust urban forest.

That is why we always look for all alternatives before choosing tree removal or approving a property owner's request for removal. However, removals are sometimes necessary to protect public safety, first and foremost, and to navigate the many challenges of growing trees in an urban setting.

We always look to see if a street tree is replantable in its current location, or closest available site.  If we have explored all options and cannot replant a street tree, that means the basin is not in compliance with Public Works Director's Order 187,246, as well as with the Minimum Guidelines which can be found on the Plant a Street Tree page.  Some common considerations that limit street tree replanting include sidewalk width, proximity to any existing infrastructure (street lights, traffic lights, stop signs, bus stops, etc.) and conflicts with any underground utilities.

"Hazard tree" shall mean any tree that poses an imminent hazard to person or property. The Director may determine that a tree is a hazard if it or any part of it:
  1. Appears dead, dangerous, or likely to fall, even after proper maintenance activities are performed to eliminate dead or dangerous parts;
  2. Obstructs or damages a street, sidewalk, or other existing structure;
  3. Harbors a serious disease or infestation threatening the health of other trees;
  4. Interferes with vehicular or pedestrian traffic; or
  5. Poses any other significant hazard or potential hazard, as determined by the Director; provided, however, that feasible measures have been applied to abate any such hazard, such as applicable Maintenance activities as defined in this Section 802. The Director's determination shall be in writing.

If Location IS replantable, tree will be replaced unless conflict with underground utilities is found. If conflict is found, replacement will be relocated or added to deferred replacement report if replacement location not found within 120 days.

If Location is NOT replantable, Replacement will be relocated or added to deferred replacement report if replacement location not found within 120 days.

Please note, photos and descriptions will be removed once the posting period has expired. Contact urbanforestry@sfdpw.org or 628-652-TREE (8733) with questions or for more information.

  • District 2

    Site: 1

    Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Necessesary root pruning is expected to destabilize tree. Concrete must be repaired due to driveway grade and multiple utility boxes impacted by root uplift. Location IS replantable.

    Posting Period: 06/15/26 - 07/15/26

  • District 2

    Site: 2

    Reason(s) for Tree Removal: The tree is a hollow stump with decay,  little canopy and low vigor. Location is NOT replantable.

    Posting Period: 06/29/26 - 07/29/26

  • District 2

    Site: 2

    Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Necessesary root pruning is expected to destabilize tree. Concrete must be repaired due to driveway grade and multiple utility boxes impacted by root uplift. Location is NOT replantable due to utility conflicts.

    Posting Period: 06/15/26 - 07/15/26

  • District 2

    Site: 1

    Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Tree has been historically pollarded into a stump and is no longer providing benefits. Decay is present in mainstem and remaining scaffold branch. Location IS replantable.

    Posting Period: 06/29/26 - 07/29/26

  • District 2

    Site: 1, 2

    Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Trees are on top of sewer line which must be replaced for proper sewage drainage from building. It cannot be repaired without destablizing the trees. Due to spacing and the sewer line, only one tree can be replaced.

    Posting Period: 6/22/26-7/22/26

  • District 3

     (added to website 6/23/26)

    Site: 1

    Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Ficus tree has multiple recent failures. Crown of tree experiences competing/codominant stems, past branch failures, limbs repeatedly damaged by vehicles, history of sidewalk repair and root pruning. Any pruning mitigation would cause canopy imbalance and make the tree unstable. Location is replantable.

    Posting Period: 6/23/26 - 7/23/26

  • District 5

    Site: 4

    Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Significant damage from recent vehicle impact has destabilized tree. Root pruning for required sidewalk repair is expected to further destabilize tree. Location is replantable.

    Posting Period: 06/29/26 - 07/29/26

  • District 5

    Site: 1

    Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Required root pruning for upcoming sidewalk repair expected to destabilize tree. Recent vehicle collission removed over half of tree crown. Remaining crown is weak and has poor stucture. Location is replantable.

    Posting Period: 06/29/26 - 07/29/26

  • District 5

    Site: 1

    Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Increased risk of whole tree failure as evidenced by severe reverse taper at base of stem, likely steming from past trunk gridling and significant root pruning for past sidewalk repair. Multiple codominant stems and branches with included bark similar to past failures. Open wounds with evidence of decay. Location is replantable.

    Posting Period: 07/06/26 - 08/05/26

  • District 9

    Site: 1

    Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Roots are uplifting sidewalk and impeding access to adjacent fire exit to buliding. Significant sidewalk uplift is along primary path to adjacent school from bus stop. Required root pruning will severely impact health of tree. Significant decay in trunk cavity from previous branch failure has an increased risk of trunk failure given species failure profile. Location is replantable.

    Posting Period: 06/29/26 - 07/29/26

  • District 9

    Site: 2

    Reason(s) for Tree Removal: Recent failure has destabilized remaining branches. Tree will be pruned to address immediate hazard, but will be too severe to retain tree. Location is replantable.

    Posting Period: 06/29/26 - 07/29/26
