Sunset Boulevard Repaving Project: Motorists Urged to Take Alternate Routes

Road construction work scheduled Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco Public Works is scheduled to repave Sunset Boulevard, between Lake Merced Boulevard and Taraval Street – roadway improvement work that is expected to result in delayed travel time along the busy arterial road. Those delays will be temporary during construction hours.

Starting Monday, Sept. 9, crews will begin paving Sunset Boulevard, between Lake Merced Boulevard and Taraval Street. Work will continue for two weeks, until Sept. 23.

Contractor crews will first work in the northbound direction on Sunset Boulevard and then turn around to pave the southbound lanes. The expected work hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Motorists using Sunset Boulevard should expect delays and allow for extra travel time. The traffic lanes along this portion of Sunset Boulevard will be temporarily reduced from three lanes to one. If possible, please avoid the area and use alternate routes.

This project includes construction of 23 new curb ramps, 20 bus pads, street base repairs and repaving along 44 blocks of Sunset Boulevard. The repaving work will include more than 12,000 tons of new asphalt and will cover more than 880,000 square feet. These infrastructure improvements will make the corridor safer and more accessible for all users.

Public Works is a 24/7 City agency responsible for the care and maintenance of San Francisco’s streets and much of its infrastructure. The department cleans and resurfaces streets; plants and maintains City street trees; designs, constructs and maintains City-owned facilities; inspects streets and sidewalks; constructs curb ramps; removes graffiti from public property; trains people for jobs; and partners with the diverse neighborhoods in San Francisco to provide stellar cleaning and greening services.
