San Francisco City Hall Seismic Upgrade

City Hall, known as the “Crown Jewel” of San Francisco’s historic Civic Center, suffered extensive damage during the Loma Prieta Earthquake. The necessary seismic upgrade, financed by the Earthquake Safety Program Phase II, provided the impetus to restore the building’s architectural beauty as well as bring it into the 21st century with state of the art technology.

We provided architectural services to the seismic upgrade portion of the project. The use of a base isolation system allowed for minimal disruption of the richly ornate historic fabric. We also contributed to the tenant improvement bid packages that included the complex restoration of 25,000 square foot of light courts and the information and security casework in the main lobby. The team provided continuous support to this ten-year project from the relocation of 22 city departments, through the design and construction phases, the move back of the city departments and to this day continues to provide post-occupancy services.
