Project Status

The Minna–Natoma Streetscape Project continues to move forward, with several important milestones completed as the project prepares for its next major phase.

The construction team has successfully completed sewer improvement work along Natoma Street, marking a significant achievement for the project. In addition, all project redesigns have been completed and approved, and the artwork planned for the streetscape has also received final approval.

While stakeholders may continue to see smaller construction, maintenance and preparatory activities within the work zone, the project is not expected to return to full mobilization until early 2027. During this period, San Francisco Public Works and the construction team will continue coordinating schedules, utilities, property access and neighborhood events to support an efficient return to full construction.

These completed milestones bring the project closer to delivering a safer, more accessible and vibrant connection through San Francisco’s South Downtown neighborhood.

Current and Upcoming Activities

Limited work may continue throughout the project area as the construction team prepares for the next phase. Activities may include:

• Minor infrastructure and utility work
• Site maintenance and preparatory activities
• Traffic-control adjustments and construction coordination
• Planning for future roadway, sidewalk and streetscape improvements

• Coordination with nearby businesses, hotels, cultural institutions and event organizers

   

During construction activities:

• Pedestrian access will be maintained whenever possible.
• Vehicle and property access will be accommodated where feasible.
• Temporary traffic controls and signage will be used to safely guide motorists, pedestrians and cyclists through the work area.

• Advance notice will be provided whenever upcoming work is expected to significantly affect access or travel.

Project Overview

The Minna–Natoma Streetscape Project will transform Minna Street and Natoma Street between 2nd and 3rd streets into safer, more accessible and welcoming pedestrian corridors connecting the Salesforce Transit Center area and Yerba Buena Gardens.

Planned improvements include:

• Widened sidewalks to improve pedestrian comfort and accessibility
• Raised crosswalks to enhance pedestrian safety
• New traffic signals and pedestrian crossings to improve mobility and visibility
• Roadway reconstruction to provide a smoother and more reliable travel surface
• Public art installations
• Enhanced street lighting
• New street furniture
• Landscaping and greening elements
• Decorative and patterned pavement features

Together, these improvements will create a safer, more inviting and visually engaging streetscape that reflects the energy and character of the surrounding neighborhood.

Construction Background

Construction began in July 2025 and is being delivered by Bauman Landscape and Construction, LLC. Active construction resumed in April 2026 following a temporary pause for project redesign and utility coordination.

Since then, the project team has completed the Natoma Street sewer improvements, finalized and approved the redesign work, and secured approval for the project’s public artwork. These accomplishments have established a strong foundation for the next phase of construction.

The project will continue to advance in carefully coordinated phases, with full mobilization currently anticipated in early 2027.
