District 6

This project will enhance bicycle safety and convenience through this important connector for bicyclists from Market Street to the Polk Street corridor, a busy bike thoroughfare. This two-block stretch along the southern end of Polk Street, from Grove Street to Market Street, has separated bike lanes in both directions.
 

A new northbound bike lane is separated from traffic by landscaped medians. The existing southbound separated bike lane was widened and a painted buffer with safe-hit posts was added between Hayes and Market Streets.
 

In early 2006, the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development, the Planning Department, Public Works and the Mayor’s Office of City Greening conducted community workshops to determine the needs of the Lower Polk Street neighborhood. Through the collaborative community planning process, businesses and residents along the corridor identified improvements that would make Polk Street a greener, cleaner and a more inviting environment. 
 

The improvements include streetscape improvements for McCoppin Street, Jessie Street, Stevenson Street, Valencia Street, Elgin Park, and Pearl Street. The project consist of street trees, medians, chicanes, landscaping, new lighting, street imprint/cobblestone, and brass street name plaques.

San Francisco Public Works was asked by the Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure (OCII) to provide professional services for the Transbay Folsom Street Improvement Project.
 

The project furthers a portion of the Transbay Redevelopment Project Area Streetscape & Open Space Concept Plan approved in 2006. It is comprised of temporary and permanent right-of-way improvements along Folsom Street, from Second to Spear, located in Supervisorial District 6.
 

Public Works coordinated with the Transportation Authority’s Van Ness Avenue Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, which proposes dedicated bus lanes, transit signal priority, pedestrian improvements, and transit platform improvements. We also collaborated with numerous other City agencies, and would like to thank the Mayor’s Office of Greening, City Real Estate, the Arts Commission, and the Municipal Transportation Agency for their dedication to the project.

The existing building is considered to be a historically significant building with the new tenant improvement areas on the first floor, third floor, fifth floor and sixth floor.  The new San Francisco Office of the AIDS Renovation tenant improvement suite on the first floor will be the main patient area featuring multiple exam rooms, a chart room, a laboratory and staff and office spaces.  The third floor will feature an audio and video conference room, storage room and a break room.  The fifth floor will feature office spaces, a few upgraded exam rooms and a work room. 

Originally constructed for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915, the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium is one of the monumental buildings surrounding Civic Center Plaza. The building was identified as a seismic risk and was included as part of the voter approved 1990 Earthquake Safety Program Phase 2 (ESP2) to be seismically upgraded.
 

Project Update
Paving completed on Harrison from Main to First streets.  Two blocks additional blocks are scheduled to be ground and paved this week from 2nd to 4th streets.  Curb Ramps completed and damaged concrete-street base repaired up to 8th Street.

On October 17, 1989, the Loma Prieta earthquake caused widespread damage to the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco. San Franciscans reacted decisively by approving a bond measure of $332 million to repair and seismically upgrade a number of civic buildings, including $49.5 million for the Opera House. Key elements involved in the restoration of this historic landmark were the seismic retrofits, assessibility, upgrading of all theatrical systems with state-of-the-art technology and restoration of the historic finishes to the facility.

In May, the American Institute of Architects (AIA), San Francisco chapter, recognized Public Works with two awards for its project at 525 Golden Gate Avenue; the new home of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. The project won for its ‘Integrated Project Delivery’ a best practice that results in improved coordination and a timely delivery.
