SOMA Alley Improvement Project

PROJECT UPDATE

February 2011-  This project is complete.

PROJECT INFORMATION

DPW is making major roadway and beatification renovations to the South of Market alleyways. This work includes a wide range of improvements to the alleyways such as raised sidewalks at intersections, widened sidewalks and new ADA ramps, special roadway paving, new landscaping and lighting as well as art elements.
These renovations are expected to influence traffic calming by enhancing the sidewalk which will make the alleyways more pedestrian and bicycle friendly and slow automobile traffic with the use of the raised crosswalks, and chicanes, which alternate parking on either side of the street. The intention is to have these renovations serve as a model for future improvements to other alleyways throughout the city.

During construction, expect a certain level of noise, dust and disruption from the excavation equipment. Our construction team will do their best to minimize impacts to area businesses and residents. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes to avoid delays. Please observe all construction signage and signals.
There will be limited parking during construction work hours. Please see the posted barricade signs for exact work days, hours and locations because they may vary depending on the construction task. Street cleaning restrictions will still be in effect.

LOCATION

Renovations will occur on the following alleys:

Harriet Street (Folsom Street-Howard Street)
