PUBLIC WORKS KICKS OFF THE 2025 SEASON OF NEIGHBORHOOD BEAUTIFICATION DAY –
MONTHLY WORKDAYS THAT BRING TOGETHER COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS
AND CITY CREWS TO GREEN AND CLEAN THE CITY
Saturday’s event will focus on neighborhoods in District 11 with tree planting, graffiti removal, landscape maintenance and other community improvements
SAN FRANCISCO — This Saturday, Public Works kicks off the 2025 season of Neighborhood Beautification Days, a series of monthly events that brings together community volunteers and City crews to green and clean our shared public spaces.
Participants plant street trees, wipe out graffiti, pick up litter, spruce up landscaped medians and more.
What: Neighborhood Beautification Day volunteer greening and cleaning workday
When: Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025
Where: Kickoff at James Denman Middle School playground, 238 Seneca Ave.
The community improvement projects not only net immediate results but also spark a renewed spirit of civic pride — a powerful pairing to advance San Francisco’s post-pandemic comeback.
“Public Works crews are on the ground every day, cleaning and greening San Francisco. But we know we can’t take care of the City alone. It takes all of us,” said Public Works Director Carla Short. “Joining forces like this and making a difference through collective purpose to build community and make our neighborhoods more inviting is what these workdays are all about.“
Public Works hosts Neighborhood Beautification Day one Saturday a month, January through November, rotating through each of San Francisco’s 11 supervisorial districts. The day begins with a brief speaking program before teams head out to different sites in surrounding neighborhoods for a morning of work. Participants are invited to gather together at the end for lunch.
Some volunteers show up solo; others attend with community groups, multi-generational families, schools and work colleagues. Everyone is welcome.
This Saturday’s event will focus on the Outer Mission, Crocker Amazon and other District 11 neighborhoods.
Newly inaugurated Supervisor Chyanne Chen will help get the day started at a short speaking program set for 9 a.m. at the James Denman Middle School playground, 238 Seneca Ave.
Also, new for 2025 – and as a nod to the NBA All-Star Game that San Francisco will be hosting next month – Public World will showcase Neighborhood Beautification Day all-star student volunteers.
The department will be issuing “NBD All-Star” certificates to Bay Area students, 7 to 25 years old, who attend six or more Neighborhood Beautification Day events. Certificate recipients will be publicly recognized for stepping up to better San Francisco.
