Department of Public Works Supports Coastal Cleanup Day

and focuses on Bayview Waterways

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The Department of Public Works (DPW) will support the state’s Coastal Cleanup Day this Saturday, September 25th by beautifying coastal areas, gardens, and parks throughout District 10, which includes Bayview, Hunters Point and Potrero Hill.  Volunteers will remove litter and debris from coastal areas, plant trees, work on other greening projects, and paint out graffiti.

“Litter is not only a blight on our neighborhoods, but when it enters our waterways it pollutes the bay,” said Mohammed Nuru, Deputy Director of Operations at DPW. “These kinds of community partnerships help us prevent litter and keep our neighborhoods and bay clean.”

Hundreds of volunteers are expected to attend and work in areas such as Islais Creek Park, Warm Water Cove and nearby neighborhood hot spots. Many of the work projects were suggested by the residents of the district. In addition to a coastal cleanup, the department is soliciting volunteers to help install an accessible pathway in the Alice Griffith Housing Development’s Community Garden and help plant there.  Recology and Clean City Coalition are providing Gigantic Three services to residents in District 10 on Saturday morning from 8 am to 12 noon at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, where residents can drop off bulky items, recycling and compost for free.  Proof of residency in District 10 is required.

The Community Clean Team is led by the Department of Public Works in partnership with other city agencies, residents, merchants and students to clean and beautify San Francisco neighborhoods.  This year is its 10-year anniversary.  More information is available atwww.sfdpw.org.
