POPULAR MURAL ACTIVITY RETURNS TO SUNDAY STREETS

The one-of-its-kind mobile Free Wall painting project invites artists of all ages to participate in innovative graffiti prevention activity

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – As a part of the 2011 Sunday Streets kickoff this weekend, the public is invited to join in on the exciting return of the hugely successful Mobile Free Wall Activity on Sunday, March 20th along The Embarcadero and Howard Street. The program sets up a giant, temporary wall to act as a canvas where urban artists and the public can gather to practice their creative skills.

Last fall hundreds participated in the graffiti-prevention activity, which partners the San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) and the Department of Public Works (DPW) to emphasize the value of providing artists a safe, legal and space with permission to create. In a few short hours an original, beautiful mural takes form on a grand scale.

Cyclists, families and artists of all ages are welcome and encouraged to drop by the Free Wall and contribute throughout the Sunday Streets event, which lasts from 11am to 4pm. Spray paint and safety equipment are all provided and participants are invited to be creative and have fun with the improvised design of the mural.

DPW and San Francisco’s Graffiti Advisory Board continue to develop and support new and innovative programs to reduce illegal graffiti vandalism, including this partnership with the SFAC. One easy way to get involved is by signing the Zero Graffiti Pledge, where residents commit to abate and report graffiti, www.zerograffitisf.org.
