CITY AGENCIES JOIN FORCES TO WALK DOOR TO DOOR TO PREVENT ILLEGAL DUMPING

SF Environment and Public Works Employ Grassroots Education Campaign in the Bayview Hunters Point

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The San Francisco Department of the Environment and Department of Public Works are collaborating to conduct door-to-door outreach in several neighborhoods in the Bayview Hunters Point. The grassroots campaign will deploy a team of five people that will walk merchant corridors to educate both businesses and residents about the impacts of illegal dumping and provide resources to prevent the activity from occurring in and around the community. The Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood is a hot spot for illegal dumping activity.

The outreach campaign called “Don't Leave it on the Sidewalk” intends to educate the public about the adverse financial, environmental and social costs of illegal dumping on San Francisco’s sidewalks and streets.  The departments will inform residents that leaving bulky items, such as couches and mattresses, garbage bags, or any debris on city sidewalks is illegal and costs taxpayers millions every year. They will also provide information about quick, easy and free ways to dispose of bulky items and provide information about legally-required refuse service and mandatory recycling. The outreach team for this campaign is from these neighborhoods and is excited to support efforts to improve of the community.
