DPW Crews Repairing Broadway Tunnel Ceiling

Damaged by an Over-Height-Limit Truck

San Francisco, Ca – The Department of Public Works' (DPW) crews are conducting a night-time repair project inside Broadway Tunnel where the ceiling was damaged by a truck exceeding the heights limitation of the tunnel bore last summer.

Carpenters from DPW's Bureau of Building Repair have completed installation of the base substrate for the ceramic ceiling tiles this week and will restore the tunnel ceiling and lighting to the original design. In late July this year, a truck, ignoring the maximum vehicle height for entry into the tunnel, gored the tunnel ceiling along over 30 yards of surface length at the south bore of the Broadway Tunnel at Larkin Street entrance.

In order to minimize the traffic disruption of this major thorough way in San Francisco, all repair work is performed at night, from Monday to Friday, 10 p.m. through 6 a.m. Eastbound traffic is closed during work hours. Motorists are advised to take detoured routes to pass through the area. The entire project is expected to be completed in early November.

DPW's carpenters, engineers and electricians from Bureau of Building Repair are working closely with Bureau of Urban Forestry's cement shop and the Bureau of Street and Sewer Repair to repair the tunnel including demolition and replacement of ceiling bracing, substrates, ceramic tiles, and lighting.

DPW is responsible for the care and maintenance of San Francisco's streets and much of its infrastructure. The department cleans and resurfaces streets; plants and maintains City street trees; designs, constructs and maintains city-owned facilities; inspects streets and sidewalks; constructs curb ramps; removes graffiti from public property; and partners with the diverse neighborhoods in San Francisco to provide stellar cleaning and greening services.
