SF PUBLIC WORKS TO HOST 500 STUDENTS AT OPEN HOUSE DURING PUBLIC WORKS WEEK
STUDENTS TO LEARN, FIRST HAND, HOW TO KEEP CITY CLEAN AND GREEN
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The Department of Public Works (DPW) will host an Open House at its Operations Yard on Wednesday, May 19th for San Francisco fourth and fifth graders to demonstrate how the department cleans and greens the city.
Students will drive green machines, learn how to paint out graffiti, build planter boxes and plant drought tolerant plants; learn about the value of a clean city by attending a “Stop Litter” educational class; and participate in a “sewer tour.” Students will also visit the city’s crafts shops and dispatch center to meet the people who keep the city moving.
National Public Works Week is celebrated the third week of May every year to raise the public's awareness of public works issues and to increase the public’s understanding of public works programs and services that improve the quality of life for present and future generations.
The Department of Public Works is responsible for the care and maintenance of San Francisco’s streets and much of its infrastructure. The department cleans and resurfaces streets, plants and maintains city street trees; designs, constructs and maintains city-owned facilities, inspects streets and sidewalks, constructs curb ramps, removes graffiti from public property, and partners with the diverse neighborhoods in San Francisco to provide stellar cleaning and greening services.
