Fire stations operate and are staffed by firefighters 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is critical that our first responders are housed in safe and seismically sound facilities with the capacity to provide essential emergency response services. ESER 2014 continues the work of ESER 2010 of renovating and replacing selected seismically-deficient fire stations. The work funded through the 2014 ESER bond improves safety, seismically upgrades essential facilities and creates a healthy work environment for firefighters.
Several neighborhood fire stations were selected to receive work through ESER 2014. The facilities and their scope of work were carefully selected based on their operational and tactical importance, ensuring the effective deployment of first responders in the event of a major earthquake or disaster. Significant capital improvements and construction projects will have been completed at all SFFD Fire Stations at the conclusion of the 2010 and 2014 bond programs. Among the ESER 2014 projects is the new Fireboat Station No. 35.
“It is imperative that our fire stations, located in every neighborhood of San Francisco, are seismically safe to ensure a timely response to the over 120,000 incidents that the Fire Department responds to each year. In addition, our emergency firefighting water system will receive funding to repair, replace and improve this most vital component to suppressing fires in our City. ESER 2014 will allow for day-to-day improvement and efficiencies in our Department and will play a critical role in our effectiveness with any large-scale disaster. It is a sound investment in our City’s future.”
– Joanne Hayes-White, former Chief, San Francisco Fire Department
