PUBLIC WORKS TO HOST PLANNING MEETING FOR SECOND STREET IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

San Francisco, CA – In preparation for the Second Street Improvement Project, the San Francisco Department of Public Works (DPW) in partnership with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (MTA) is hosting a planning meeting to inform the design of the 2nd Street corridor. The 2nd Street Improvement Project extends from Market Street to King Street, stretching from downtown San Francisco to the SOMA district. The community, through the recently adopted East SOMA Area Plan, identified 2nd Street as a primary pedestrian, bicycle and transit thoroughfare and a ‘green connector’ for the neighborhood. This project aims to implement that vision by transforming 2nd Street into a pleasant multi-modal corridor that improves safety and access for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.

In accordance with the San Francisco Bicycle Plan, the project goals include space for bicycles along the entire length of 2nd Street, from Market to King Streets. Other key elements of the project are pedestrian improvements, streetscape improvements (trees and plantings), roadway resurfacing, concrete curb reconstruction, the installation of ADA-compliant curb-ramps, and upgrades to the traffic signal system.

DPW is responsible for the care and maintenance of San Francisco’s streets and much of its infrastructure.
