San Francisco, CA – In commemoration of the Martin Luther King National Day of Service, the Department of Public Works (DPW) will be supporting the efforts of the African American Art & Culture Complex, Organizing for America and Citizen Hope to host a one-day volunteer initiative throughout San Francisco.
DPW will provide supplies and assistance to volunteers that will be participating in tree-planting, gardening and litter cleanup activities throughout the city. In addition, the department will host cleaning and greening volunteer activities along Geary Boulevard and in the Western Addition.
In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a “National Day of Service,” which takes place annually on the third Monday in January and is led by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service.
Partners for the MLK National Day of Service in San Francisco include the African American Art & Culture Complex, Organizing for America, San Francisco Park and Recreation Department, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority, San Francisco Police Department, the Glide Memorial Church, Lefty O’Doul’s, the National Parks Department, Mo Magic, and Citizen Hope.
