Renovated Fourth Street Bridge Reopens Labor Day Weekend

San Francisco, CA -- The historic Fourth Street Bridge is preparing to reopen Friday (Sept. 1) to vehicular, boat and pedestrian traffic in time for the Labor Day weekend.

The opening follows an extensive seismic retrofitting and structural reinforcement project, including the integration of rails for San Francisco's new Third Street Light Rail. This new line will re-establish rail service between San Francisco's downtown and other key areas with points along the Bayshore Corridor, including historically underserved communities in Bayview and Hunter's Point.

Begun in 2003, the renovation is the first major upgrade of the drawbridge, which spans the Mission Channel near AT&T Park, since it was built 89 years ago.

During the bridge's reconstruction, the Department of Public Works closed the channel, relocated the 300-ton bascule-span component to a China Basin/Mission Bay construction yard for several months, and returned it to the channel -- all without disrupting ongoing events and Giant's ballgames at AT&T Park.
