The Folsom Street project is in the final stages of construction, with crews focused primarily on completing punch-list items, remaining streetscape elements, and final installations. 

✅ Completed

• 32 trees planted — One additional tree remains to be planted at 880 Folsom Street.
• Benches and seating — Complete.
• 15 commemorative plaques — Complete.
• Transit boarding islands — Complete between 6th and 9th Streets.
• Transit island railings — Nearly complete, with remaining work at Folsom Street and 3rd Street.
• Roadway resurfacing — Complete between 2nd and 11th Streets.

🚧 Coming Up

Landscaping and Low Planting | Sept. 21–25
Crews will continue landscaping and low planting, primarily along Folsom Street between 4th and 8th Streets. Significant planting is also planned at the VMD Park medians and bulb-outs.

Leather & LGBTQ Cultural District Pole Wraps | Late September
Decorative pole wraps will be installed along Folsom Street between 7th and 11th Streets.

Decorative Crosswalks | Oct. 5–23

• Leather District crosswalks near Folsom and Dore Streets
• SoMa Pilipinas crosswalks between 5th and 8th Streets

Bus Island Shelters
The remaining transit island shelters will be installed by Clear Channel.

🚦 Traffic Operations

Permanent Striping
SFMTA is continuing permanent striping work between 2nd and 5th Streets, with completion anticipated in September.

Traffic Signal Switchovers
Traffic signal switchovers between 2nd and 5th Streets will continue through October. Once the new signals are operational, the existing signal poles will be removed and the affected sidewalks will be restored.

Please allow extra time when traveling through the corridor and follow posted signs and directions from crews.

Project Description and Scope of Work:

SF Public Works has hired Mitchell Engineering to perform vital infrastructure improvements along Folsom Street between 2nd Street to 11th Street.  The Folsom Streetscape Project which began in May of 2024 has an overall duration of 2-years, 7-months (950-days). The Folsom Streetscape Project aims to improve traffic safety and livability along this important corridor. Folsom Street is part of the City’s Vision Zero high-injury network, making it a high priority for street-safety improvements. The Folsom Streetscape Project will transform the corridor, prioritizing non-motorized modes of travel.

Streetscape features:

• two-way protected bikeway
• landscaped median separating the bikeway from traffic

Greening elements:

• 33 new trees
• median landscaping
• rain gardens to capture stormwater runoff

Roadway and utility work:

Wastewater replacement (replacing more than 1,300 linear feet of aging sewer pipelines and rehabilitating approximately 1,000 linear feet of existing 3’x5’ brick sewers with cured-in-place liner)

Sewer work is mainly on:

• Folsom Street between 10th and 11th Street
• Folsom Street between 7th and 8th Street
• Folsom Street between Hawthorne and 4th Street

Emergency firefighting system that supplies water to our fire hydrants. We will reconstruct 3 high-pressure hydrants and approximately 300 linear feet of the system.

Updating streetlights with brighter, more efficient lights and adding sidewalk lighting

Installing new electrical duct-bank overhead contact system and traction power improvements
