Public Works to Create Citizen’s Advisory Committee for Better Market Street Project
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The Department of Public Works is leading a multi-agency collaborative effort to create a 15-member Citizen’s Advisory Committee (CAC) for the Better Market Street Project (BMS). The project aims to transform Market Street’s streetscape while improving the public's experience along the corridor.
“The Better Market Street Project provides the City an opportunity to enliven one of the most vital corridors in San Francisco through comprehensive public realm improvements,” said Kris Opbroek, Project Manager for the Department of Public Works. “The formation of this committee will help ensure broad participation and community feedback throughout every stage of the Better Market Street Project.”
The goals of the Citizen’s Advisory Committee are to meet regularly for three years to discuss ideas, coordinate plans, establish timelines, and educate the public. They will also promote interaction between local residents and government, ensure that comments and points of view of participants are recorded, and facilitate consensus on the Better Market Street Project. The project team is encouraging individuals to apply to become a part of this 15-member committee.
"The success of the Better Market Street Project will depend on working closely with a broad group of San Franciscans to ensure a revitalized Market Street, one of the City's most important civic streets, meets the community's aspirations for the future,’ said Neil Hrushowy, Lead Urban Designer for the Better Market Street Project with the Planning Department.
The Better Market Street Project is expected to include enhancements supported by sustainable urban design and mobility principles that facilitate promenading opportunities and an enlivened sidewalk life. It will also look to improve the transit service to be more reliable and efficient, and develop a safe, comfortable and appealing bicycle facility along its entire length. The plan will take advantage of the planned re-paving of Market Street from Van Ness Avenue to Stuart Street by correlating improvements to maximize efficiency in construction.
The public can learn more about this committee and the overall project by visiting www.bettermarketstreetsf.org. The deadline to apply and submit applications is Tuesday, September 7, 2010.
The Better Market Street Project is a multi-agency initiative between the Department of Public Works (DPW), the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD), the Planning Department, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), the Transportation Authority (TA), the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) and other community and business groups.
