African American Art and Culture Complex and Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts Seismic Retrofit Project
San Francisco Public Works, the San Francisco Arts Commission, and Pankow Builders have partnered to deliver seismic safety improvements at two of San Francisco’s cultural centers: the African American Art and Culture Complex (AAACC) and the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts (MCCLA).
The projects will strengthen both buildings to improve earthquake safety while addressing accessibility, building systems, and other facility improvements to support their continued use as community arts and cultural spaces.
Construction Schedule and Temporary Relocation
Both cultural centers are currently preparing for construction, including packing and relocating artwork, archives, equipment, furnishings, and other materials. Both buildings are scheduled to be vacated by December 15, 2026, and turned over to Pankow Builders shortly afterward.
Construction activities, including demolition, may begin as early as January or February 2027, with completion anticipated in spring or summer 2028. Both cultural centers will be temporarily closed during construction.
