To allow construction crews to work in the roadway and in the Muni trackway, we will be shutting down Market Street between 5th and 8th Streets from 5:00am on Saturday, October 14th through Saturday, October 28th. During this period, we'll be temporarily moving above-ground transit off Market Street between 3rd Street and 10th Street to avoid the construction zone.

Why do we need to strengthen post-disaster response facilities?

After a major earthquake or other disaster, San Francisco will rely on select public buildings to deploy aid, provide shelter and coordinate emergency response and recovery. It is essential that these facilities be viable and functional for these purposes and remain operational.
 

Why do we need to renovate the 9-1-1 Call Center?

The 9‐1‐1 Call Center is operated and managed by the Department of Emergency Management. It is located at the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at 1011 Turk Street in the Western Addition neighborhood and houses public safety dispatchers who answer all calls made to 9‐1‐1. These dispatchers are the initial point of contact for all of San Francisco’s first responders, 24 hours a day.

Japantown’s Buchanan Mall is the pedestrian portion of Buchanan Street that runs for one block between Post and Sutter streets. Along with Peace Plaza, it’s the geographic and cultural heart of the neighborhood. The Mall is paved with a river of cobblestones, connecting two fountain installations, consisting of origami flower forms designed by renowned artist Ruth Asawa, and surrounded by low, circular stone walls.

Project Description
San Francisco Public Works has partnered with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency to complete infrastructure and safety improvements along Fulton Street and Grove Street. Our partnership allows us to minimize impacts to the public by consolidating our work whenever possible.
 

San Francisco Public Works has contracted with Esquivel Grading & Paving, Inc. to renovate the roadway at various locations in neighborhoods as part of the Various Locations No. 47, Pavement Renovations Project. The scope of work will include sidewalk, curb ramp construction, concrete road base repair and final roadway paving.  The work under this contract will occur between November 2021 and June 2022.
 

The Buchanan Mall runs between Grove and Eddy Streets and consists of five blocks of green space, three playgrounds, a basketball court, and pedestrian paths.

Public Works and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has collaborated with the Tenderloin community to developed a new vision for Taylor Street between Turk and Ellis streets to improve transportation safety and livability for all users of this corridor. The Safer Taylor Street project will provide transportation safety and streetscape improvements along Taylor Street, including sidewalk widening, pedestrian crosswalks, corner bulbouts, new traffic signals, and streetscape enhancement such as decorative paving, new street trees and street furnishing.
