Here is what is happening on Folsom Street :

Construction is progressing steadily, with major paving and concrete work continuing through mid-May 2026. The most intensive impacts over the next several weeks will involve sidewalk reconstruction, roadway paving, and intersection upgrades, particularly between 3rd Street and 5th Street.

Segment 3 -Folsom Street 2nd St. to 5th St

  • Roadway base-repair - 4th Street to 5th Street (Northside).
Roadway base repair restores the structural layer beneath the pavement that supports traffic and prevents surface damage. When the underlying base becomes weakened by water, heavy use, or ground movement, the pavement above it can crack, sink, or develop potholes.
    What the work includes
    •    Identifying areas where the pavement structure has failed
    •    Removing damaged asphalt or concrete
    •    Excavating weakened base material
    •    Installing and compacting new base aggregate
    •    Repaving the repaired section to match the existing roadway

  • Sidewalks, Islands & Concrete Work
    • 4th–5th Street:
      • North side flatwork: April 20 – May 13
      • Islands and roadway base: through mid-May
    • 3rd–4th Street:
      • Sidewalk (north & south) and island work: April 20 – mid-May
      • Bus island and bus pad construction at 3rd Street: late April – mid-May

Segment 2 - Folsom Street 5th St. to 8th St.

Current Work (Mid-April 2026)

  • Paving Schedule
    • Thursday, April 23: Grinding and paving will take place from 5th to 6th Street.
    • Friday, April 24th: Griding and Paving will occur between 7th to 8th Street.
    • Wednesday - Friday, April 29 - May 1: Grinding and paving will proceed from 6th to 7th Street, including the 6th Street intersection.

Work Process (Grinding and Paving)
Each block will undergo a same-day “grind and pave” operation. This process involves:

  1. Grinding: The contractor will remove the top layer of existing asphalt to create a smooth, even surface. This step also addresses surface irregularities and prepares the roadway for new pavement.
  2. Paving: Immediately following grinding, a new layer of asphalt will be placed and compacted. Completing both steps on the same day minimizes impacts and allows the roadway to remain functional.

Traffic, Parking, and Access

  • The street will remain open to through traffic at all times; full street closures are not anticipated.
  • Parking will be restricted during active working hours only and will be restored at the end of each workday.
  • Driveway and garage access will be maintained, though brief delays may occur. Please allow additional time when entering or exiting properties.

Roadway Striping
Following paving, the contractor will install temporary striping to guide traffic. At a later date, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will return to install permanent roadway striping and markings once the new asphalt has properly cured.

Segment 1 - Folsom Street 8th St. to 11th St.

  • no activity at this time. In project punch-list phase.

Project Description and Scope of Work:

SF Public Works has hired Mitchell Engineering to perform vital infrastructure improvements along Folsom Street between 2nd Street to 11th Street.  The Folsom Streetscape Project which began in May of 2024 has an overall duration of 2-years, 7-months (950-days). The Folsom Streetscape Project aims to improve traffic safety and livability along this important corridor. Folsom Street is part of the City’s Vision Zero high-injury network, making it a high priority for street-safety improvements. The Folsom Streetscape Project will transform the corridor, prioritizing non-motorized modes of travel.

We are aware of the inconvenience caused by construction and apologize in advance.  We will do everything possible to minimize the impact of our activities on your neighborhood.  If you have concerns (scheduled deliveries, construction questions, accessibility needs, and access) please contact Public Affairs, Dadisi Najib.

Your cooperation will help this project be a success for your neighborhood and the City of San Francisco.  Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.
