STREETSCAPE IMPROVEMENTS BEGIN ON BROADWAY
Popular corridor will be safer and more attractive
San Francisco, CA -- Construction work is under way on Phase III of the Broadway streetscape improvements. This community-supported project is the last of three phases to beautify the corridor and enhance pedestrian safety.
The current Broadway streetscape work, between Kearny and Montgomery streets, consists of intersection bulb-outs to shorten the pedestrian crossings, new landscaping and street trees and pedestrian-friendly street lighting. The project also includes a repaved roadway between Kearny and Battery streets to make for a smoother and safer ride for cyclists and motorists.
The $1.8 million construction project is scheduled to be completed in November, capping the Broadway corridor makeover stretching from Columbus Avenue to Battery Street. Begun eight years ago, the improvements were developed with the assistance of the Chinatown Community Development Center, the North Beach Chamber of Commerce and neighborhood residents and businesses.
“Broadway is one of San Francisco’s most iconic streets, well known for its neon nightlife and as a tourist destination, but it also serves as an important corridor for North Beach and Chinatown residents,” said San Francisco Department of Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru. “These changes will make the street more inviting and accessible, something to be enjoyed by locals and visitors for years to come.”
Board of Supervisors President David Chiu, who represents the area as the District 3 supervisor, said he is excited that work is under way to complete the upgrades.
“This already is one of San Francisco’s most historic and culturally vibrant neighborhoods,” Chiu said. “The new Broadway streetscape will add beauty, make it safer and create a more enjoyable experience for the people who travel the corridor.”
