StreetTreeSF Opt-Out Information

Do you still care

San Francisco property owners can opt out of the free citywide street tree maintenance program (StreetTreeSF) and continue to maintain their street tree(s).

Your commitment to maintain your tree includes caring for it per City standards. Once initiated, the opt-out process will connect you with one of our certified tree inspectors for an inspection of your tree. The process concludes with the signing of the Opt-Out Agreement (legal document is known as the Street Tree Maintenance Agreement).

What are the steps to opting out?

The process to opt out of StreetTreeSF includes the following steps:

What exactly would I be agreeing to do?

Per the Opt-Out Agreement, you are responsible for...

  • The street tree and adjacent sidewalk area located at your property address
  • Routine maintenance on a regular cycle
  • Maintenance to address broken or hanging limbs or a collapsed tree
  • Keeping the sidewalk and street around your street tree free of obstruction and safe for pedestrians and vehicles, including removing and disposing of maintenance-related debris
  • Maintenance of your street tree should be completed by a certified arborist whose name and contact information will be provided to Public Works
  • Maintenance will follow the City’s Pruning Standards

Do not...

  • “Top” your street tree
  • Use pesticides in or around the street tree unless you have approval from Public Works

Public Works may step in...

  • And notify the property owner when any other pruning needs arise with a timeline to complete otherwise Public Works will perform the required pruning
  • To perform emergency maintenance to protect public safety
  • If any maintenance that does not meet City Pruning Standards is performed (such as topping) or if maintenance is not being performed on a regular cycle (penalties may apply)

Don't forget to notify Public Works in writing...

  • When there is a change in ownership of the property
  • In advance, should you wish to terminate this agreement
  • In advance, should you wish to renew this agreement as it approaches the 1-year term limit

NOTE: this summary does not constitute legal advice from San Francisco Public Works. Property owners should carefully review the proposed agreement and seek their own legal counsel, as appropriate.
