What is the ESER bond program?

Earthquake Safety and Emergency Response (ESER) is San Francisco's bond program to strategically address critical public safety needs in the City. The program identifies seismic improvements and upgrades to City-owned facilities that are needed to help safeguard San Francisco. 
 

Public Safety Building

The Public Safety Building is officially open and fully operational as of April 2015.
 

The LEED Gold-certified police headquarters, located in Mission Bay, replaced the more than 50-year-old location at the Hall of Justice (850 Bryant Street) with a seismically-resilient building that accommodates the needs of a modern police force. It also replaced the Southern District Police Station. 
 

Earthquake Safety and Emergency Response Bond 2010

ESER 2010, a $412.3 million General Obligation bond, was approved by voters in June 2010. The first of a comprehensive bond program, ESER 2010 spearheaded the City's efforts to enhance safety and emergency response by ensuring that police and fire facilities and infrastructure remain uncompromised in the event of an earthquake or other major disaster.
 

Earthquake Safety and Emergency Response Bond 2020

San Francisco voters approved a $628.5 million Earthquake Safety and Emergency Response (ESER) bond during the March 2020 election. The bond, which is the third installment of the ESER program, will fund upgrades and much-needed improvements to capital infrastructure that will allow San Francisco to quickly respond to a major earthquake or other disaster and recover from its aftermath.

Earthquake Safety and Emergency Response (ESER) is San Francisco's bond program to strategically address critical public safety needs in the City. The program identifies seismic improvements and upgrades to City-owned facilities that are needed to help safeguard San Francisco.

 

The third phase of the ESER bond program was approved by voters with 82 percent approval during the March 2020 election. ESER 2020 will continue the work of the previous two ESER bonds that were overwhelmingly approved by voters in 2010 and 2014.

 

New SFFD Station 49 (Ambulance Deployment Facility Project)

The new 58,451-square-foot facility, located at 2241 Jerrold Avenue in the Bayview, stands four stories tall and replaces the previous Emergency Medical Services headquarters, which was located in San Francisco Fire Department’s logistics warehouse at 1415 Evans Avenue. The new headquarters has state-of-the-art technologies designed to meet the specialized needs of Emergency Medical Services staff and will allow first responders to better prepare their ambulances for deployment when responding to calls for emergencies and health crises.
 

Office of the Chief Medical Examiner

What is the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner? 

The Medical Examiner coordinates the investigation and certification of deaths in San Francisco. Medical examiners investigate and sign death certificates for all manners of deaths (homicide, suicide, accident) and deaths of persons who may be unidentified. Services provided by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are essential and critical for the community.
