Completed in early 2025, the Potrero Gateway Project revitalized and reconnected the Potrero Hill neighborhood separated by US 101 by creating a gateway and providing a safe passageway under the freeway overpass along 17th Street from Vermont Street to San Bruno Avenue, and along Vermont Street between 17th and Mariposa Streets., locations on San Francisco’s Vision Zero High Injury Network. The project improves pedestrian, bicyclist, and motorist safety and accessibility by widening sidewalks, constructing corner bulb-outs, enhancing bike lanes, installing new local native planting, and new pedestrian lights.

 

Public Works also partnered with the San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) for a sculptural public artwork installation along 17th Street. The artwork was installed after the Potrero Gateway Project infrastructure work was completed.

 

This project was sparked from a community initiative to improve the ignored space around and under the US 101. The Potrero Gateway Park Steering Committee is a community group that has been championing change and improvements in this area since 2012, working with the greater community and raising funds for this project. The Dogpatch & NW Potrero Hill Green Benefit District (GBD) is actively involved in the area providing maintenance through an Adopt-A-Highway permit and is partnered with Public Works for the continued maintenance of the space.
