Project description

The Powell Street Improvement Project runs along Powell Street between Market and Geary Streets in San Francisco, California.
The Chinatown / Him Mark Lai Branch Library, originally built in 1921, is a cherished neighborhood landmark that will undergo a significant renovation to meet the needs of current and future library communities. The upgraded library will continue to serve as a welcoming, multi-generational space for learning, creativity, and cultural connections.
San Francisco Public Works has contracted with Esquivel Grading and Paving, Inc. to improve sewer utilities and renovate the roadway at various locations in San Francisco as part of the Various Locations Pavement Renovation and Sewer Replacement Project No. 80 (VL80). We will be performing this work in the Tenderloin, Lower Nob Hill, Civic Center and Union Square neighborhoods.
Project Update (August 10, 2026)
Project Description
The Portsmouth Square Improvement Project is a complete revitalization of Chinatown’s historic central plaza, located above the Portsmouth Square parking garage at 733 Kearny St. Funded primarily by the 2020 Health and Recovery Bond, Transit Center Impact fees, the Downtown Park Fund, grants and a $6 million state allocation, this 1.3-acre renovation celebrates the site’s rich history while serving the needs of Chinatown’s densely packed, multi-generation community.
The Chinatown Public Health Center (CPHC) Improvement Project is the first major renovation of this vital community clinic since its opening in 1971. Located at 1490 Mason St., CPHC is the most seismically vulnerable public health clinic in the City. It provides culturally competent, multilingual primary care, mental health, dental and nutrition services, accommodating more than 19,000 annual patient visits. More than 80% of the patients speak Chinese dialects.
The Hallidie Plaza Accessibility Improvements Project, located at the north corner of Market Street and Cyril Magnin Street, will focus on bringing accessibility improvements to Hallidie Plaza.
The project improvements will include permanent removal of the decommissioned Market Street elevator and construction of new accessible ramps that meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Standards. A new main ramp will provide access from Market Street level to plaza level and a second smaller ramp will provide access from plaza level to the BART/Muni station level.
