When the time finally came to renovate the landmark Bayview Opera House, designer Walter Hood decided to elicit neighborhood feedback the way it would have been done in 1888 when the hillside auditorium was built.
He dragged a rocking chair onto the porch overlooking Third Street and invited neighbors to tell him what they thought of the old barn, which wasn’t much. Those who could find it, hidden behind a brick wall and thicket of trees, lined up to speak to the esteemed Hood, one-on-one. There was a 30-minute maximum, and some needed it all.

Planting, Pruning, Weeding, Washing and Painting Projects on Tap for Saturday
San Francisco, CA – More than 250 volunteers are expected to join Supervisor Scott Wiener and Public Works crews on Saturday at the monthly Community Clean Team workday to beautify and clean parks, medians, streets, hillsides and schools in the Castro, Diamond Heights and other District 8 neighborhoods.
San Marcos / Santa Rita Avenue Roadway Improvements
In July 2016, San Francisco Public Works began roadway improvements on San Marcos and Santa Rita avenues that would include sewer replacement, stairway repair, concrete work on curbs, and sidewalk and driveway replacement. All sewers have been visually inspected via video camera and evaluated by San Francisco’s Public Utility Commission. An evaluation and condition assessment of the sewers under this project were completed and identified for full segment replacement. During detailed design, we explored trenchless technologies.
9 San Bruno Muni Forward Project
As part of Muni Forward, SFMTA is implementing transit priority and pedestrian safety improvements along the 9 San Bruno route that will make it safer to walk, increase the reliability of service, and enhance the customer experience—on and off the bus. The 9 San Bruno Muni Froward Project will consist of constructing new transit islands, bus bulbs, bus pads and curb ramps and all associated work.
